NATIONAL CIVICS BEE COMING TO BISMARCK-MANDAN

Encouraging the next generation of informed and engaged citizens starts with helping students understand how they can make a difference in their communities. That’s why the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is proud to host the region’s National Civics Bee.

The National Civics Bee gives local middle school students an opportunity to learn about civics, engage with their communities and develop leadership skills. The annual competition challenges students in grades 6-8 to identify a problem in their community and propose a solution through a written essay application of four separate prompts, with strong responses typically ranging from 150 to 200 words each. Judges select finalists to advance to live competitions, where students compete for recognition, prizes and the opportunity to advance to higher levels of the competition.

The Chamber EDC is proud to support civic engagement and encourage students to explore how they can make a positive impact close to home. The competition provides participants with an opportunity to think critically about community challenges while learning how civic involvement can create meaningful change.

“Encouraging students to get involved at an early age is vital to developing informed, engaged citizens and future leaders,” said Brenda Nagel, president and CEO of the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC. “The Chamber EDC supports programs like the National Civics Bee because they inspire young people to think critically, contribute to their communities and make a positive impact.”

Created and organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the National Civics Bee is designed to inspire students to become informed and active citizens while strengthening their writing, critical thinking and public speaking abilities. Students who participate gain knowledge about American democracy, learn to engage respectfully and constructively, and build trust in their communities and institutions.

Students in grades 6-8 interested in participating can begin preparing their essays now. The essay submission deadline is February 2, 2027. Visit https://www.bismarckmandan.com/civicsbee/ to learn more.

In addition to local recognition, participants have the opportunity to advance through the competition, with the National Champion receiving a $100,000 contribution to a 529 education savings account.

The Chamber EDC encourages parents, educators and community leaders to share this opportunity with eligible students and help foster the next generation of engaged citizens.
