1. I see a state that is recognized as a good place for business and which offers an exceptional quality of life, education, careers, and environment for raising a family.

2. It is my education, along with my varied background as a construction worker, teacher, employee of a major national corporation, and business owner for over twenty years. I have relied on this experience to carry out the duties of this office for the past eighteen years. My specific skills match up well with this office's over 30 distinct and detail-oriented responsibilities. Many pieces of legislation initiated by my office, which have benefited the state's citizens and businesses, have most often received virtually unanimous approval by the legislature. This includes options for entrepreneurs that did not exist when I was first elected and which are now used by 15,000 businesses.

3. As a member of the Business Services Committee of the National Association of Secretaries of State, it is to continue to oppose the adoption of federal legislation and regulations, which will negatively impact businesses and people.

4. To continue to operate the office (with statesmanship and integrity) in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible to provide citizens and businesses with services in the least restrictive manner and to ensure the continued history of having well administered and accurate elections.

5. If appropriately and wisely managed, it is a means that can be developed to convey valuable and useful information to the public.

1. North Dakota's economy continues to boom despite national trends; however, this can only be sustained when an efficient government works alongside businesses. Government must embrace new technologies that promote economic prosperity and serve as a good steward of taxpayer dollars.

2. I represent Grand Forks in the state legislature. In addition, I serve as the executive director of a non-profit free clinic for low income residents. I graduated UND with degrees in history and geography, and later taught political and physical geography. I'm active in Rotary International, Sons of Norway, GF/EGF Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and serve on various boards and task forces in North Dakota.

3. The biggest challenge will be bringing the office into the 21st century while minimizing taxpayer investment. The current officeholder recently wasted $770,000 in taxpayers' money on a computer program that did not work, causing the project to be abandoned and taxpayers receiving nothing in return. I will work with employees, and consult with technology experts and businesses, to make the office user-friendly for businesses.

4. Working with businesses, contractors, and county officials to improve government efficiency. The world has evolved -- now we need a fresh perspective in the way state government works with its clients and taxpayers to produce exceptional results.

5. Social media allows government to engage different demographics and quickly provide information to the public. While it is no replacement for press releases, conferences, e-mail, phone calls or personal conversations, it should be utilized to increase government transparency.
