James Schmidt (R)

1. My vision for North Dakota is a state that is self-reliant utilizing and sustaining its natural resources to create private sector jobs with minimal state and federal government involvement.

2. My 33 years of experience as an employee of USDA, including financial management, natural resource management, policy development, working with landowners, local, state and federal agencies and interactions with Congressional staff, has given me experiences on what constitutes effective government versus wasteful government. My nearly 2 years of local government involvement as a board member of Morton County Water Resource District, Missouri West Water Systems and Morton County Soils Committee have given me knowledge of the relationship between the people and local government. As a private landowner of 900 acres of agricultural land, I have an understanding of what it takes to keep an agricultural operation viable. I believe my experiences in government, my current local government involvement and my relationship with agriculture make me suited for the office I am seeking.

3. Based on input from District 31 residents, property taxes are first, and, property taxes are intertwined with many issues in North Dakota. A close second is assuring state government does not "grow."

4. I believe that development of a diverse energy base creating private sector jobs is our current biggest opportunity. One of the many energy benefits is the opportunity for North Dakota to retain residence of our youth.

5. Social media is a form of communication, and among many things, a way to exercise free speech.

1. I want to see North Dakota remain a great place to live work and raise a family

2. My past legislative experience and involve on various boards qualifies me. I am a farmer and rancher. I have a strong work and good moral values and common sense.

3. The biggest challenge will be diverting state revenues to state revenue to the western part of the state. We need to shore up our infrastructure. We need to take care of roads, house our technology issues out there.

4. I think to help ensure North Dakota remains a good place to live work recreate and raise a family.

5. I think too much can be revealed and information can get into the wrong hands. However, I may see it from a different point of view. Technology is here. We have to live with it but we have to regulate it in some way as well.
