Sitting Bull College was founded in 1973 as Standing Rock Community College. In 1996, the college changed its name as a tribute to its most revered and famous tribal member, Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull College, then called Standing Rock Community College, was fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Education in 1984.
Today, Sitting Bull College program offerings include seven Certificates, 19 Associate Degrees and seven Bachelor of Science degrees.
At the time the charter was granted, different colleges from around the state were offering a number of courses on the reservation. However, there was no coordinated effort and tribal leaders felt it would be best to go through one institution. This was done initially through Bismarck Junior College (BJC) which later became the fiscal agent for a grant to establish the Standing Rock Community College and eventually Sitting Bull College.
The process of seeking accreditation was initiated in 1975. Candidate Status for accreditation was granted to Standing Rock Community College in 1978 after a thorough evaluation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Higher Education. This status meant the college was recognized as being ready to provide educational services, with full accreditation six years later. To mark this achievement and recognize the continued growth, the college officially changed its name to Standing Rock Community College.
In 1996, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council voted to officially amend the charter, changing the college’s name to Sitting Bull College.
