Military Education Fair

The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee (MAC) will sponsor its first Military Education Fair to be held at the North Dakota National Guard Raymond J. Bohn Armory on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to all active duty and reserve personnel, family members, veterans and DOD civilians.

"This is the first event of its kind in the region, which makes it unique. Schools from all over the region have been invited to participate," said Shelle Michaels, Military Affairs Committee chairwoman. "By collaborating with the North Dakota National Guard Education Services Office we will be able to showcase many different education opportunities in one place, for the convenience to the service members, veterans and their families. It‘s an excellent way for the Chamber to add value for its members and, at the same time, support our troops in their educational pursuits."

Chamber businesses are encouraged to pass this information on to their employees that are in the military or veterans.

Representatives will be available from 15-20 colleges, universities and trade schools to answer questions about returning to school, enrolling, eligibility and transferring previously earned college credits. Additionally, each participating school will donate a door prize, valued around $200, which will be awarded by random drawing during the education fair.

For more information about the Military Education Fair or the Chamber Military Affairs Committee, contact Shelle Michaels at (218)779-7271 or shellemichaels@soldiersangels.org or Dot Frank, Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce at 223-5660 or dotf@bismarckmandan.com.

ND Troops Care Package Deadline

The North Dakota National Guard is again in full motion with deployments of two units now deployed to Kosovo and Kuwait. There are 160 members in the 188th Engineer Company (vertical), which is based in Wahpeton, with a detachment in Oakes and another 55 soldiers in the Bismarck-based 1st Battalion, 112th Aviation Regiment (security and support).

The Chamber's Military Affairs Committee is requesting support from the Bismarck-Mandan business community while these soldiers are away during their deployment. The committee will ship monthly theme packages to the commanders -- Capt. Lucas Klette of the 188th and Lt. Col. Bill Watson of the 1-112th -- to distribute amongst their troops. Your business can get involved by donating items. Shipping costs will be sponsored by Soldiers' Angels.

The theme for October is all about Halloween candy; please drop a bag or two of un-opened candy to Dot Frank at the Chamber by Oct. 25. If you have any questions or want to further support the deployed units, please contact Military Affairs Committee chair Shelle Michaels at (218) 779-7271 or ShelleMichaels@SoldiersAngels.org.
